Description
This foldaway design dichroscope is a specialized tool for observing pleochroism in birefringent gemstones. It works with single crystals that are transparent, semi-transparent, and colored. To use, ensure the gemstone sample is illuminated by white light sources, such as natural daylight or incandescent lamps, avoiding monochromatic light. Maintain a viewing distance of 2-5 cm between your eyes, the dichroscope, and the sample. Rotate the gemstone or dichroscope 360 degrees during observation, noting trichroism from multiple directions. Distinguish between true dichroism and color bands, as two observed colors in the same direction often indicate color banding rather than pleochroism.
